Hi folks!
Come state? È da un po'!
It's been a minute since I last wrote an actual weekly, so here is the long awaited message! These last few weeks have been pretty hectic. The work is going well here and so we're keeping our days full. But the happy news of the month is Lucia! We started teaching her when I first got to Siracusa, and she has accepted a baptismal date! It was will be next week, so keep her in your prayers! She really is so amazing and it has been so special to watch her grow.
So, here in Siracusa, a special thing has started to take place. As the holiday seasons start to roll around, all the street stands start popping up. Literally all over the city are these tiny side stands where they roast chestnuts for you to buy. We bought some and roast them ourselves at home. It's a little more work, but then we can eat them hot and fresh in the morning. SOO good. And also all these little stands are up for selling zeppole. For those of you who remember my time in Ostia, there were Zeppole. Those are not the same things as the zeppole here. Here they are just donut holes, freshly fried, and stuffed full of things. Like Nutella, pistachio cream, or anchovies. They are pretty good. But the funny thing is the chestnut stands put out a ton of smoke from their little fire place things. We were walking home late last night when we saw a huge plume of smoke. We thought it might be a chestnut stand, but there was enough smoke for it to be from a house. So we were a little worried. But as we got closer it was just a really really smokey chestnut stand. But I took a photo and attached it below.
Other things this week, I got to hop the fence to break into the church, and I am learning how to crochet! (I have no idea how to spell that word. Hopefully it's right.) There is this group of old ladies who meet every week in our church to show all the creative things they are working on. And we get to go. It's amazing. And they make us necklaces, and earrings, and they teach us how to do things. I love them. But the problem this week is that the door to the church got broken this week and our key doesn't open the other doors. So we ended up hopping the fence to try and open the door for these activities held in church. It was the highlight of my week. 😂 We now have a key that will open all the doors.
Also this week has been hot and rainy. It was a code red day because of how much rain there was. Friday and Saturday were really bad. During the worst hours, when it was raining the hardest I have ever seen, we were outside on our way to appointments. And the thunder and lighting was right above us. I got soaked, and it was kinda scary but a blast. It was just a huge adventure.
Other than that, our work is just going good here and I am loving being with Sorella Spencer. She is just such an amazing missionary and she is always helping me to be better. Plus we laugh a lot together which is nice.
Anywhosies, I love you all SOO much and hope you have an amazing week and Happy Halloween!!
Love,
Sorella Thorup
